Lower House Speaker Laura Boldrini
marked the anniversary of universal suffrage in Italy on
Thursday by recalling the "many steps" taken by women since they
cast their first ballot 70 years ago.
"On March 10, 1946, Italian women left the single dimension
of mother and wife imposed by the Fascist regime and became
political and social subjects," Boldrini wrote in a post to her
Facebook page.
"Many fought a long battle to obtain this right. Twenty-one
women were then elected to the Constituent Assembly. Now they
represent 30% of parliament," she continued.
"Now the path to true equality is also through full female
employment because only 47% of Italian women work, even though
it has been shown that with a higher percentage productivity
would increase," Boldrini wrote.
