Tuscany Governor Enrico Rossi
said Monday that he intends to launch a bid to replace Premier
Matteo Renzi as the head of the centre-left Democratic Party
(PD).
"Tonight at my home in Pontedera I will officially
announce that I will run to be the national secretary of the PD
and then I'll work to collect the necessary signatures to do
so," Rossi said in Pisa.
"My bid will be an alternative to Renzi, while aiming to
go beyond the dynamics between Renzi supporters and Renzi
opponents. That's why I call myself a convinced Rossian".
Renzi became the head of the PD with a landslide win in a
poll of members in December 2013.
Two month after that he ousted fellow PD member Enrico
Letta to become Italy's youngest premier and Monday is the
second anniversary of him becoming head of government.
Some PD members have been critical of Renzi being both
party leader and premier, saying his government responsibilities
do not allow him to devote sufficient attention to the needs to
the party.
