Speranza, a member of a minority in Premier Matteo Renzi's
Democratic Party (PD) that is frequently critical of the
executive, said Wednesday that the PD should not water down a
bill on civil unions after its path through parliament hit
trouble. "Now is the time to go forward and win this challenge,
the PD must not stop," Speranza said. "The text (of the bill)
should be kept as it is. It's already a compromise. It's
unimaginable to remove the stepchild adoption (provision)".
However, Rosa Maria Di Giorgi, who is part of a group of
Catholic PD lawmakers opposed to the bill, had a different take.
"Now we'll see what happens," Di Giorgi said. "It's not out of
the question that the bill will go back to the committee stage.
The bill's path through parliament will probably have to be
reconsidered".
