Italy's big three unions, CGIL,
CISL and UIL, on Tuesday called off a general strike in public
services that was to have hit Rome on January 27. CGIL said the
strike had been suspended because Rome Commissioner Francesco
Paolo Tronca had guaranteed workers would get back a previous
pay cut starting from February 1. It said talks on a new
contract would start Monday.
