The Senate on Thursday approved
definitively a law authorising the government to overhaul
Italy's rules on public procurement with 170 votes in favour, 30
against and 40 abstentions.
The government must now pass the necessary enabling decrees
on the basis of the framework set out in the reform.
Thursday's vote represented "another block for at last
building more transparent, simpler, fairer Italy," said Chiara
Braga, the environment rep for Premier Matteo Renzi's
centre-left Democratic Party (PD).
The reform will bring Italy into line with European Union
directives on public procurement and concessions.
It also authorises the government to simplify Italy's
public contract code with a more incisive role for the national
anti-corruption authority headed by former anti-mafia magistrate
Raffaele Cantone.
