The mayor of Quarto near
Naples, Rosa Capuozzo, launched a tearful plea against
"exploitation of the fight against the Camorra mafia" during a
city council meeting on Friday, after the meeting had to be
suspended and police had to intervene to keep order.
"All those who are exploiting this case should be ashamed
of themselves," she said.
Tension in the session escalated after a motion was blocked
to discuss facts surrounding the case of former councillor
Giovanni De Robbio, who was recently ejected from the
anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) for his involvement in
a probe for mafia association.
"The fight against the Camorra is everyone's fight, and
everyone has to fight it. If, on the other hand, it's fought for
other questions, that's exploitation. This has to be clear to
the citizens of Quarto," Capuozzo said in tears.
On Thursday, M5S leader Beppe Grillo put up an extensive
question-and-answer post explaining wiretaps released December
23 and published in the Italian media Wednesday in which De
Robbio had a supposedly incriminating - but in fact totally
innocent, Grillo said - exchange with Capuozzo.
Parties on all sides of the political spectrum have called
for Capuozzo to quit.
