The number of visitors to the
archaeological site of Pompeii fell sharply on Tuesday due to a
four-hour strike by staff working on the Circumvesuviana railway
linking the excavations to the Campania regional capital.
The strike affected passengers of cruise ships docked at
Naples port in particular.
Only tourists travelling by coach made it to the ancient
commercial town buried by ash when Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD.
