The island region of Sardinia has
the cleanest beaches in Italy, according to the 2016 ranking
published by environmental watchdog Legambiente and Touring Club
Italia on Friday.
Sardinia boasts five of the 19 seaside resorts awarded the
prestigious five-sails label for natural beauty, services, and
management of the local area, including Domus de Maria near
Cagliari, which topped this summer's ranking.
Second place went to Pollica near Salerno in the southern
Campania region and third place to Castiglione della Pescaia in
the Tuscan province of Grosseto.
Most of the five-sails seaside resorts are located along
the Tyrrhenian coast.
The ranking also features seven lakeside resorts in
northern Italy including Molveno in the autonomous province of
Trento.
