Naples modern art museum MADRE
this Easter will apply the local tradition of the "suspended
coffee" to contemporary art.
This local tradition consists in paying for an extra coffee
for a stranger - usually a street person - to enjoy at a bar.
The Neapolitan practice has been recognized worldwide and
implemented in several countries - including Argentina, Belgium,
France, Greece, and Ireland - and in other sectors, such as
restaurants with the "suspended pizza" and bookstores with the
"suspended book".
Starting from Thursday through December 31 this year, MADRE
visitors will be able to leave a paid ticket for someone else
when they buy their own or at the end of their visit.
Organizers called it "a generous gesture and an
invitation...transforming an intimate experience into (one) of
sharing and inclusion".
The Donnaregina Foundation for Contemporary Arts, which was
set up in 2004 to promote art and culture across the Campania
region and after which the museum is named, will start things
off by leaving 10 suspended tickets a day at the box office from
Holy Thursday (March 24) to Easter Sunday (March 27).
The 7,200-square-meter MADRE museum located in the heart
of the Naples historic district houses site-specific
installations as well as works from the permanent collection and
temporary exhibitions.
Tickets normally cost seven euros.
