RAI Director General Antonio Campo
Dall'Orto said that prior to naming new directors for the state
broadcaster's three "TG" television news programs, he intends to
work with the new channel heads on the industrial plan, new
programme lineups, and the broadcaster's transformation into a
media company.
"We'll work on the product and in a few months we'll choose
the people who best represent it," Dall'Orto said.
Three names are being circulated in the press as the
possible nominees, all of whom are women: Sarah Varetto for TG1,
Lilli Gruber for TG2, and former RAI president Lucia Annunziata
for TG3 - a rumour Annunziata herself has publicly denied.
Dell'Orto will choose the nominees in absolute secrecy, as
he did when he recently decided on channel directors Andrea
Fabiano, Ilaria Dallatana and Daria Bignardi.
In terms of programming changes, RAI News under the
guidance of Antonio Di Bella will try to increase viewership and
work across the entire company, while RAI Sport under Gabriele
Romagnoli intends to give more space to sporting event
commentary.
In addition, one hundred journalists who recently passed a
public exam to join the broadcaster's ranks must be now be
assigned and distributed within the company based on their
individual standings in the exam results.
RAI board member Arturo Diaconale, who said he voted
against the three channel head nominations, is in favor of
format renewal and said the company's "tripartite" set-up is
"obsolete".
"But we need to know what the project is. We on the board
don't know," Diaconale said.
Diaconale said he wants "respect for pluralism" to play a
role in the TG appointments.
"I voted against the channel head nominations because in my
opinion they were the expression of a single viewpoint that's
not only political but also special interest," he said.
"I hope the upcoming TG nominees will be different".
