Italian police on Wednesday placed
four people under investigation on suspicion of releasing fake
certificates of compliance from the Italian Naval Registry
(RINA).
Two RINA engineers, Marco Benzi and Giorgio Ceroni, were
placed under house arrest while frigate captain Marco Noris and
vessel captain Antonio Sartorato were banned from carrying out
their duties.
All four are accuse of making false public statements.
In particular, the two engineers did not detect "anomalies"
in the Jolly Nero, a cargo ship that crashed into Genoa port's
control tower in May 2013, killing nine people and injuring
four.
In January a prosecutor requested that a court sentence Jolly
Nero commander Roberto Paoloni to 20 years and seven months in
prison.
Paoloni, who is on trial with four other people, is accused
of multiple culpable homicide, causing a building collapse and
attacking transport security.
The two engineers also issued bogus certificates for all the
Messina group, sources said.
