Prosecutors in Turin on Tuesday
opened an investigation after a baby girl died in the hospital
of the Piedmont town of Moncalieri in the night between Sunday
and Monday, two days after her birth.
The newborn died in the hospital's neonatal intensive care
unit at 1:30 am, possibly due to respiratory distress.
Prosecutor Alessandro Aghemo is looking into possible
manslaughter charges and has ordered an autopsy.
The baby's family, of Moroccan origin, claim the baby girl
was in critical condition when she was born by emergency
C-section, which doctors decided to perform after a 13-hour-long
labor, their attorneys Clementina Cillo and Filippo Mattaboni
said Tuesday.
The hospital has opened an internal investigation.
