Italian police have arrested
three people suspected of involvement in the November 2015
murder of Pietro Esposito, a leader of a group within the Naples
Camorra mafia organisation.
According to investigators, Esposito was killed to make it
easier for the rival Lo Russo clan to control illegal activities
within the Rione Sanità area north of Naples' historic centre.
Those arrested are Ciro Perfetto, Luigi Cutarelli and
Rosario Di Stefano. Investigators made use of statements from
clan head Carlo Lo Russo, who has recently started to
collaborate with police.
The decision to kill Esposito came as a response to
demonstrations of force by his Esposito-Genidoni clan involving
random firing of arms towards rivals, according to sources close
to the investigation.
His death then set off a round of reprisals culminating in
the so-called "Fontanelle massacre" not far from the Fontanelle
cemetery, in which two people were killed and three injured.
