Anti-establishment 5-Star
Movement (M5S) bigwig Alessandro Di Battista on Tuesday
cancelled a stage of his round-Italy motorbike tour to return to
Rome to deal with an M5S crisis sparked by a probe into
environment cabinet member Paola Muraro, long denied by Muraro
and Mayor Virgina Raggi. "There are problems in Rome and it's
best if I return,"said Di Battista after cancelling the Ischia
stage of his Costituzione CoastToCoast tour against the
government's Constitutional reform. Di Battista said he hoped to
"already resolve this evening some issues so as to keep my
appointment tomorrow night in Nettuno to end the tour." Raggi
has said she informed M5S high-ups of the Muraro probe when she
learned of it in July, but the party's leaders have reportedly
denied this, prompting Raggi to say she informed the M5S
'directorate' in Rome. Muraro has been under investigation since
April 21 on suspicion of unauthorized waste management during
her 12 years as consultant to municipal waste company AMA. The
government's Constitutional reform, turning the Senate into a
regional body to cut gridlock, will be put to a referendum in
December.
