A man murdered his ex last night
with a gun and a hatchet, police said Tuesday.
Carmela Aparo, 64, was hacked and shot twice in the chest
in a parking lot in the Monza-area town of Seregno, and died in
hospital an hour later.
Ex-boyfriend Attilio Berlingeri, 56, was arrested two hours
after the fact and reportedly told arresting officers he did it
because he couldn't bear that their relationship was over. He
was reportedly found in possession of both murder weapons.
The Sicilian victim and the Calabrian killer - who has a
rap sheet for drug trafficking, is under psychiatric treatment,
and is known to police as being linked to the so-called Zingari
clan of the 'Ndrangheta mafia - first got together at the end of
the 1980s, when they both moved to the northern Brianza area.
The woman also had a record: in 1989 she was reported to
police for a knife attack on a woman who appeared to be taking
an excessive interest in Berlingeri.
In April 1992, the couple survived a shooting by two men
dressed up as Carabinieri policemen at Aparo's doorstep.
Their relationship fell apart two and a half years ago, and
Aparo reported Berlingeri to police for battery in 2015.
She was killed after agreeing to meet him one more time
last night.
Berlingeri has been charged with aggravated murder and
illegal weapons possession, and is in jail in Monza.
