A North African Muslim inmate in
a jail in the northern Marche town of Pesaro on Monday attacked
a guard and broke his nose.
Guards' union SAPPE said the perpetrator of the "cowardly
attack" was known to prison authorities for his "Islamic
fundamentalism" but prison authority DAP denied this, saying he
was in jail for ordinary crimes and not terrorism.
However, like other Muslim inmates, he was being monitored
for the risk of radicalisation, DAP said.
