Two young men were sentenced Friday to eight years in prison each for drugging and raping a female friend during a party.
Mattia Rizza and Edoardo Nieri, both in their early 20s, were found guilty of incapacitating the victim by lacing her drink with GHB - a so-called date rape drug - and then sexually abusing her during a pool party in July 2014.
The victim reported the incident at the emergency room, where she went complaining of amnesia after the party.
Police later found traces of GHB in bottles at the party location, a villa belonging to the grandfather of one of the two defendants.
The two assailants, both from the Tuscan town of Pontedera, were also sentenced to paying the victim damages of 80,000 euros and banned in perpetuity from holding public office.
The prosecution had requested nine years.
The victim said she might have forgiven her attackers had they apologized to her immediately.
"But they didn't, and this is the result," she said at the end of sentencing.
