Rome Deputy Mayor and Executive
Councillor for Sport Daniele Frongia of the 5-Star Movement
(M5S) on Monday said he's open to discussion on Rome's bid for
the 2024 Summer Olympics, but that his party isn't changing its
position.
The M5S has been vocal in expressing its opposition to the
bid.
Frongia spoke at the inauguration of an athletic track in
Ostia prior to a meeting there with Italian Olympic Committee
(CONI) President Giovanni Malagò.
Cabinet undersecretary Luca Lotti, also present at the
inauguration, said the government will "support all activities
necessary to get documents in order for the commitments that
count" regarding the Olympics bid.
Malagò said he was "pleased" to hear the city is open to
discussion and said changes could be possible.
"The bid technically isn't the Bible; like everything, it
can change," Malagò said.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, delegations from Rome's city
government and the Lazio region will be in Lausanne, Switzerland
for technical meetings of the International Olympic Committee
(IOC), along with CONI representatives and the Rome 2024 Olympic
bid promotion committee.
The meetings are of a legal and financial nature in light
of the October 7 deadline for the second part of the bid
process.
