Ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi "will
be able to do what he wants" after he recovers from heart
surgery, doctors Ottavio Alfieri and Alberto Zangrillo said
Wednesday.
They said there were "no obstacles" to the three-time
premier and media magnate's fully resuming his political
activity.
Berlusconi's progress after heart surgery has been
"absolutely regular, the best we could have expected," his
personal physician Zangrillo told a press conference.
Zangrillo said Berlusconi made a characteristic quip when
he woke up, offering one of the nurses a job on TV station
Telecinco.
Alfieri said "I don't think there are any particular
restrictions to the (future) activity of (Berlusconi). Of
course, his age will have to be taken into account but I
wouldn't say: 'No, he can't conduct an electoral campaign'."
Alfieri led the operation to replace Berlusconi's aortic
valve while Zangrillo, the media mogul's personal physician, was
the anaesthetist at Milan's San Raffaele Hospital.
The heart surgeon added there is "absolutely no chance" of
Berlusconi's new bovine aortic valve being rejected and that it
will not deteriorate before "15-20 years".
It is expected to take up to two months for the 79-year-old
to get back up to speed in his centre-right political career.
Berlusconi will spend 5-6 days in hospital after his heart
surgery and then 10-15 days in rehabilitation "unless there are
complications", Alfieri said.
