A court on Thursday reinstated
the day release from prison regime of Doina Matei, the Romanian
woman who in 2007 was sentenced to 16 years in jail for killing
a woman after stabbing her in the eye with an umbrella.
Matei had been granted 'semiliberty' status last year,
which allowed her to work in a social cooperative in Venice
during the day and return to prison in the evenings.
But the court suspended work release for Matei after some
photos of her at the beach appeared on Facebook, causing a
public outcry.
Matei's lawyer said Thursday one of the conditions of her
return to semiliberty was that she cannot use social networks.
He voiced the hope that the cooperative that had found her
work in a pizzeria would soon find her another job.
Vanessa Russo, 23, was killed in 2007 after Matei attacked
her with the umbrella during a fight at a Rome metro station.
