Giovanni Malagò, the president of
the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), said Thursday that Italy
was the country with the second highest rate of positive doping
test, while stressing that this did not necessarily mean the use
of performance-enhancing drugs was more prevalent here than in
other parts of the world. "Today we are the country with the
second highest number of positives at the Olympic level," he
told a Senate committee. "You can read this figure in two ways.
Either we are a country that uses doping substances a lot, or we
are a country that controls (well)". Malagò also told the Senate
panel that he had "always been optimistic" about Rome's bid for
the 2024 Olympics.
