Finance police are investigating a
third suspect in a bid-rigging case that led to the arrest of
the mayor of the northern city of Lodi earlier this week,
sources said Wednesday. Ex-mayor Simone Uggetti, who today
suspended himself from the governing Democratic Party (PD), and
lawyer Cristiano Marino are behind bars. The alleged third man
is Luigi Pasquini, a restaurateur who is also president of the
Wasken Boys sporting association, which was awarded a contract
to manage the city's public swimming pools. Uggetti is accused
of trying to format computers to make compromising
correspondence about a contract to manage two city swimming
pools disappear. Investigators believe the contract was steered
to a specific company.
