(ANSAmed) - Berlin, May 4 - The Austrian interior ministry on
Wednesday said it would introduce new controls at the Brenner
Pass with Italy if the migrant flow from the south rises, the
APA agency reported. The European Commission earlier authorised
the extension of Austrian border controls with Hungary and
Slovenia, a measure from which Italy is excluded. A ministry
spokesman said that Vienna sees in the EC decision "a
confirmation of the measures hitherto taken" and "no obstacle to
new measures at the border with Italy, should the situation
change". Austria has threatened to erect a border fence at the
Brenner Pass if the flow of migrants and asylum seekers through
Italy from North Africa increases, as it is expected to do.
Italy and Austria last week agreed that the fence should not go
up, for now.
