Finance police on Wednesday
executed arrest warrants issued in Rome for 13 people accused of
involvement in the manipulation of tax appeals.
A number of judges are among those implicated.
The suspects were allegedly involved in a criminal
association that enabled people who had been subject to tax
audits to win their appeals at several tax tribunals, if they
paid a fee.
The system also allegedly enabled people to obtain tax
breaks they were not entitled to.
Civil servants and Rome-based professionals were arrested
too.
Over 100 finance police officers were involved in the
arrests and searches of properties and offices to obtain
evidence.
