Police arrested the mayor of a
small town near Caserta on Monday along with four others, in
connection with a probe into graft in the town's waste
management contracts, ANSA sources said.
Rosa De Lucia, 36, of Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right
Forza Italia party and mayor of the town of Maddaloni, is being
held in jail.
Alberto Di Nardi, owner of a waste management company that
employs 300 people in the area, is also being held in jail.
Police are preemptively seizing one million euros from Di
Nardi as part of the operation.
Two city councillors and a city assessor are under house
arrest.
Police said De Lucia received 10,000 euros a month from Di
Nardi for at least two years in exchange for renewing his city
waste management contracts.
"Di Nardi was a cash machine for De Lucia," said
preliminary investigative judge Sergio Enea.
