A surgery offering free
medical treatment to homeless people living near the Vatican
opened in St Peter's Square on Monday.
The facility, made available by Papal Almoner Msgr Konrad
Krajewski, is located in Bernini's famous colonnade near the
existing showers, barber's and laundry service also provided for
the homeless.
It is staffed by specialists from the Vatican itself, Tor
Vergata university and the association Medicina Solidale, who
will initially be available for consultation on Mondays.
However, Msgr Krajewski said members of the Italian
podologists' association would also be available "immediately"
for a second day a week, and that the surgery could open daily
in due course.
