A 62-year-old man was
hospitalized with meningitis C in intensive care at Santo
Stefano Hospital in the Tuscan city of Prato on Thursday.
The patient is a resident of the small town of Chiesina
Uzzanese in Pistoia province.
He was vaccinated against meningitis C yesterday. Public
health authorities said the vaccine takes at least a month to
fully immunize the body.
Meningitis C has a 4-10 day incubation period, they said.
Tuscany has registered a surge in meningitis cases in 2016,
and regional officials have fielded a free meningitis
vaccination program for people aged 11-45 in a bid to stop the
spread of the contagious and sometimes fatal disease.
Four people have died of it in the region since the
beginning of the year.
