A man who set his eight-month pregnant girlfriend on fire told prosecutors Wednesday he could have killed her, but wanted to ruin her face instead because she was beautiful. "I had no intention of killing Carla...after setting her on fire I could have run her over and I didn't," said Paolo Pietropaolo, 40. "I wanted to disfigure her because she is a very beautiful girl". Carla Ilenia Caiazzo, 38, sustained third-degree burns to her face and upper body and is fighting for her life at Naples' Cardarelli Hospital burns unit, where doctors said Tuesday she has a 50% chance of survival.
Doctors on Monday delivered her premature baby after a neighbor rescued Caiazzo - who was repeatedly punched, then doused with alcohol and set alight - by putting out the flames while Pietropaolo fled the scene in his car.
The baby is in stable condition. The incident took place Monday in the street in front of the couple's home in the town of Pozzuoli, near Naples. The attacker was arrested later that day at Formia, between Naples and Rome, where he had a car accident.
