Italy is fourth top for
the number of cases pending at the European Court of Human
Rights after Ukraine, Russia and Turkey, according to figures in
the Strasbourg court's annual report. The number of Italian
appeals is 7,567, 11.6% of the total number of cases pending at
the court for the 47 Council of Europe member States. This is
the lowest number of Italian cases since 2009. Of the 7,567
pending cases that has been assigned to a judge, 5,614 (74%) are
in the category of cases considered to have good grounds as they
are priority cases or relate to questions the Strasbourg judges
have already ruled on.
