One in three food products
inspected by Carabinieri food safety (NAS) police over the last
three years presented anomalies or did not conform to standards,
commander Claudio Vincelli told the Senate agriculture committee
on Tuesday.
NAS officers conducted on average 39,000 inspections a year
during the 2013-2015 period, Vincelli said.
Between 33% and 34% of inspections turned up irregularities
for all three years, he added.
"Since the number of inspections is growing we can say that
generally speaking irregularities are falling slightly,"
Vincelli said.
The drop could be explained in part by the greater
awareness among producers of inspection activities and their use
of more serious production practices as a result, he added.
Inspections turned up various anomalies ranging from
approximate attempts at counterfeiting to more sophisticated
fraud.
