The Italian banking system's
net non-performing loans (NPLs) rose from 85.2 billion euros in
NOvember to 86.9 billion in December, the Italian Banking
Association (ABI) said Tuesday. ABI noted that this was still
under the record high of 89 billion reached in November 2015.
Italian banks have been trying to shed their NPLs which have
caused problems for several lenders including Monte dei Paschi
di Siena (MPS), Italy's fourth-biggest and the world's oldest
bank, which is undergoing a government-sponsored rescue because
of them.
