Alitalia is losing "500,000 euros
a day" President Luca Cordero di Montezemolo told the Lower
House's transport committee on Wednesday. He added, however,
that the airline was aiming to "balance the budget in 2017" and
reach that target "without a euro of public money".
The long-struggling former flag-carrier is trying to turn
itself around and get back to profitability after Etihad Airways
bought a 49% stake in it in an agreement that became operative
at the start of last year.
CEO Cramer Ball outlined how the company intends to get
back in the black.
"Alitalia is focused on costs, turnover, earnings but,
above all, the company needs investment," he said.
"This year we intend to invest 400 million euros in
Alitalia.
"The strategy is to grow on long-haul and also feed
internal traffic via Milan and Rome".
