INPS pensions and social security
agency said Monday it will recoup an estimated 400 million euros
in unemployment benefits unduly paid out to 50,000 fake
employees in 2014-2016.
The agency has identified 700 phony firms employing 30,000
non-existent workers in 2014-2015 alone.
INPS says it will clamp down on an estimated 500 bogus
companies with 20,000 fictitious employees this year.
Agency chief Tito Boeri said INPS has "invested in
data-based vigilance" and is cross-checking its data with labor
ministry and internal revenue records to find companies that are
cheating the system.
This data-sharing has led to some 60,000 businesses and
100,000 employees that unduly benefited from the government's
three-year tax break for new permanent hires, said INPS Internal
Revenue chief Gabriella Di Michele.
