Market fears on the non-performing
loans (NPLs) of Italian banks are "exaggerated", Bank of Italy
Governor Ignazio Visco said Thursday. He also said it was
"wrong" to think that the European Central Bank wanted "a rapid
sale" of banks' NPLs. Italy has taken a number of steps to
address the high ratio of NPLs in Italian banks, recently
setting up a private-sector fund called Atlante (Atlas) to help
weaker banks and take over their bad loans.
