A study released Thursday said that
Italy's south is experiencing an exodus of students from the
region, which over the past 10 years has resulted in 2.5 billion
euros' worth in taxes lost to the north and 3.3 billion euros'
worth of lost investment in human capital.
The study was conducted by Censis for Confcooperative, the
national federation for Italian cooperatives, for the group's
39th national assembly.
The study said that in the 2014-2015 academic year nearly
23,000 university students moved from the south to the
central-north.
It said that 8-9% of the total number of matriculated
students in the central-north university systems during the
three academic years surveyed had come from the south.
The number of matriculated students from the south in the
2014-2015 academic year totaled 168,000, the Censis study said.
