Air passenger traffic through Italy's airports rose 4.5% to 156,965,253 people in 2015 compared to the previous year, civil aviation authority ENAC reported Wednesday.
    Passengers transiting through Rome's Fiumicino Airport increased by 5.1% to over 40 million in the period. At least 25% of national passenger traffic goes through the capital's international airport, the authority said. Fiumicino was followed by Milan's Malpensa Airport with 18.4 million passengers (-1.2%) and Bergamo's Caravaggio International Airport (+18.5%).
    Also on Wednesday, ENAC said Irish budget airline Ryanair dominated the overall market in terms of domestic and international flights with 29.7 million passengers served, followed by Alitalia-CAI with 22.9 million and British low-cost airline EasyJet with 14.3 million passengers.
    On the domestic front, Alitalia was first with 12.3 million passengers, followed by Ryanair with 10.2 million and EasyJet with 2.7 million.
    In terms of international routes, Ryanair was the market leader at 19.4 million passengers, followed by EasyJet with 11.6 million and Alitalia-CAI with 10.6 million.
    Overall, traditional airlines held a larger market share (51.6%) than budget ones (48.38%).
