The government must say
"Enough!" to lay-offs, the leader of Italy's biggest trade union
confederation CGIL said Thursday.
Susanna Camusso's comment came in response to the situation
at coffee and vending machine manufacturer Saeco in Bologna, a
subsidiary of Dutch electronics company Philips, which risks
losing 243 workers due to lay-offs.
"The right words that the government should say concerning
Saeco, but also for the infinite other disputes underway is:
enough of lay-offs. It's simple," she said.
Instead "what we are seeing is uncertainty and weakness,
born of the choices that have been made" on a political level,
Camusso added.
The CGIL chief also reaffirmed the need for a new
"participation in a country that speaks in 'tweets' and royal
decrees".
This would also take the form of the special consultation
being organised by the confederation among its members with a
view to proposing a new workers' statute introducing universal
labour rights.
