Bulldozers began demolishing hundreds of illegal buildings built without planning permission amid the ancient Greek Valley of the Temples at Agrigento in Sicily, authorities said.
Magistrates on July 16 gave local authorities permission to start levelling the illegal structures within 30 days, a deadline that was temporarily blocked when lawyers for one owner got the demolition postponed on technical grounds.
In all as many as 650 buildings are set for demolition in the dazzling site.
The first structure to be knocked down Monday was a wall surrounding an illegal building in the Poggio Muscello district.
