COVID-19: energy consumption low in May in Eastern Europe

Stable only in Bulgaria and Latvia

03 September, 10:52
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 03 SET - Electricity consumption in May 2020 dropped to very low levels in the majority of European Union countries, with the strongest decreases recorded Poland (-13.7% compared with May 2019), Slovenia (-13.4%), Croatia (-11.9%), and Romania (-11.8%), together with Spain and Portugal (-13.7% and -11.6% respectively), Eurostat said today.

The total EU electricity consumption in May was 10.5% lower than the lowest May value recorded between 2016 and 2019, the EU statistical office added. Just in two Member States, Bulgaria and Latvia, the consumption of energy was stable in May.

The drop in the energy consumption was caused by the restrictive measures adopted by the authorities to slow down the spread of COVID-19, with schools, restaurants and hotels closing, people staying at home and companies halting or reducing production, Eurostat recalled. (ANSA).
