Montenegro: survey, 62% against law on freedom of religion

Only 20% supporting controversial legislation

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 06 FEB - Over 60 per cent of people in Montenegro do not support the controversial law on religious freedom, according to a new public opinion study.

The survey, produced by the agency Intelligence Communications, revealed that 62% are against the law, approved in December sparking tensions in Montenegro, 20% support it and 18% do not have a precise opinion on the topic. According to critics, the law paves the way to the possible confiscation of churches, monasteries, and other properties owned by the Serbian Orthodox Church, the majority religion in the small former Yugoslavian country. Protests against the law have been taking place since weeks in Montenegro, but also in Serbia. (ANSA).
