Migrants: Hungary, 7 days to referendum against quotas

A landslide victory of 'no' is expected but risk of no quorum

26 September, 15:57

(ANSA) - BUDAPEST - Seven days to referendum scheduled for October 2, against EU migrant quotas in Hungary. The government led by Viktor Orban has undertaken an aggressive campaign, by using very big posters, TV spots and meetings in every province, in order to fuel hatred and fear for a mass influx of Muslim immigrants into the country. Voters are requested to answer the following question: ''Do you want the European Union to require the mandatory installation of non-Hungarian citizens even without the consent of the Hungarian Parliament?''. A landslide victory of 'no' is expected, but, according to polls, the quorum is running the risk of not being achieved, since a turn-out of at least 50% is necessary, that is 4.1 million voters. The democratic opposition is divided into three options: boycott, invalid vote and, minimally, yes vote. The attack committed two days ago against the police increases the fear of terrorism, which - according to government propaganda - is closely linked to immigration.
