'Two countries that do not recognize each other cannot join EU'

(ANSA) - PRISTINA, JUN 10 - German Chancellor Olaf underlined the importance of dialogue to reach a comprehensive and final agreement between Pristina and Kosovo, today on his visit to Kosovo, the first stage of a tour across the Balkans.

Speaking to reporters at the end of talks with Kosovo, Prime Minister Albin Kurti Scholz said the dramatic events in Europe with the armed conflict in Ukraine show how vital peace and stability are. "It's crucial to agree on a comprehensive document of understanding that will promote regional stability.

Dialogue is the path that opens a European prospect for Kosovo.

And a constructive behavior is in the interest of all the citizens of Kosovo,'' said Scholz. "A political agreement - he added - is the most important step for investment, jobs, and prospects for young people." The chancellor added that an agreement must at the same time resolve the issue of recognition since, he pointed out, "it is unthinkable for two countries that do not recognize each other to become EU member states. For this reason, it is crucial that both sides engaged in the dialogue show commitment and a willingness to get closer to each other." Scholz then underlined Berlin's commitment to achieving visa liberalization for Kosovar citizens in the EU. (ANSA).
