(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 03 JUL - The French company Naval Group has been chosen to build four corvettes for the Romanian navy, a deal worth in total 1.2 billion euro.

Romania has chosen the "joint offer" of Naval Group and its partner Santierul Naval Constanta, which will build "four new Gowind multi-mission corvettes", modernize two existing "T22 frigates and create a maintenance centre and a training centre," the French company said in a statement published online today. The first corvette will be delivered by 2022 and the value of the contract amounts to 1.2 billion euro, the French ministry of Defence said in a press release. The French ministry of the Armed Forces, Florence Parly, welcomed the decision of Romania to award Naval Group the competition for the corvettes as a move towards the construction of a "strong and ambitious" Europe of defence, the ministry informed.
