Poverty: in Romania highest share of youth at risk
Rate at 28.2%, almost three times the EU average of 11%
23 January, 14:17Official data show that the highest proportion at EU level of young people aged 18-24 in work and at risk of poverty in 2017 was registered in Romania (28.2 %) in 2017, almost three times the EU average of 11%. High rates of poverty risk among youth employed were recorded also in Estonia (18.4%), Bulgaria (14.7%), Greece (14.1%) and Lithuania (13.4%).
In contrast, Eurostat said that three EU countries had rates below 5% in 2017: among them, Czechia (1.5 %) and Slovakia (3.8 %), together with Finland (4.2 %).
In 2017 the proportion of young people aged 18-24 in work and at risk of poverty in the EU was estimated to be 11.0 %, -1.1% compared with 2016. The proportion has fallen each year since a peak in 2014 (12.9 %), Eurostat noted. (ANSA).
