(ANSA) - WASHINGTON, MAY 13 - Donald Trump receives today the
'populist' anti-immigrant leader Viktor Orban, the first
Hungarian prime minister to visit the White House since 2005, as
well as a great admirer and supporter of the US tycoon.
A joint final press conference is not scheduled at the moment.
The visit, which gives a big endorsement to Orban less than
two weeks ahead of the European elections in which populist and
Eurosceptic forces aspire to win, has aroused protests in the
US.
The defenders of human rights protested - accusing the
Hungarian prime minister of trampling on these rights - along
with the Democrats, who in a letter had asked the president not
to welcome Orban unless ''he brings his country back on the road
to democracy''. Even some Republican senators urged Trump to
raise the ''erosion'' of democracy in his country during his
meeting with the Hungarian leader. But the White House merely
reported that the president and prime minister ''will discuss
ways to deepen cooperation on many different issues, including
trade, energy, cybersecurity'' and Nato. (ANSA).
