(ANSA) - TRIESTE - Over the migrants ''there is certainly
some discord, I hope that we will be able to overcome it during
the next meeting of the European Council in June, through the
asylum reform'', said the EP president Antonio Tajani,
participating in an ANSA Forum in Trieste.
''The European Parliament - he added - has finished its work,
we opted for a redistribution and rule change. We hope that,
thanks to the action that Italy, France and Germany will take,
we can finally make this reform and convince Eastern European
countries to take part in it and give their consent: the EU
parliament has done its job, now it needs solidarity on the part
of all countries, but above all it requires an asylum policy
which is an homogenous European policy. Let's stop putting on
countries such as Italy, Greece, Malta and Spain the heaviest
burden of immigration and the burden of refugees. It is true
that refugees represent a minority compared to those who arrive,
but southern European countries cannot deal with this problem
alone. We need to rebalance - he underlined - and I hope that
the next Council of Europe will be able to resolve this issue''.
Moreover, Tajani underlined that ''the southern European
countries have sent a document which suggests moving in the
direction chosen by the Parliament and the European Commission,
and the majority of the EU member countries. Macron came to
Strasbourg last week to give a speech on the future of Europe,
and said he was in favour of an asylum reform. Much work has
already been done on this problem - he said -, we just need the
green light from all our interlocutors''. (ANSA).
