(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 14 - Rory McIlroy said Wednesday that he
expects next year's Ryder Cup in Rome to be a big boost to the
Italian golf movement.
The world number two is taking part in Italian Open for the
first time, joining a star-packed field this week at the Marco
Simone Golf & Country Club, the same venue that the 2023 Ryder
Cup will take place at.
"I'm happy to be here in Rome to play at the Italian Open for
the first time in my career," the Northern Irishman told a press
conference.
"I won the European championship as an amateur in Italy in 2006.
"I'd really like to win this important tournament too.
"There will be excellent players and the course of the Marco
Simone Golf & Country Club, which will host the Ryder Cup in
2023, is interesting.
"Who wouldn't want to spend time in Rome? It's an incredible
place with its history and culture.
"And the Ryder Cup here in Rome will inspire a new generation of
young golfers in Italy.
"Marvellous players have grown up ere and let's hope more come
in the future". (ANSA).
