Italy on Thursday was the
only country in the European Union to block an EU compromise
proposal on Venezuela advanced by Swedish Foreign Minister
Margot Wallstrom accepting the role of opposition leader Juan
Guaidò as interim president until new elections.
The discussion took place at the meeting of EU diplomatic
chiefs in Bucharest.
The news was reported by Spanish news agency Europapress and
confirmed to ANSA by EU diplomatic sources.
It would have meant an implicit but not formal recognition of
Guadò as president.
On Friday Guaidò asked Italy to "do the right thing" saying a
new Libya was "impossible".
Deputy Premier Luigi Di Maio replied by saying that the
Venezuelan people would decide on change.
