Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, said Tuesday that the Catholic Church was ready to talk with everyone after Italy's general election, which failed to produce a clear winner. "I think it's possible to have dialogue with everyone and that is what the president of the (Italian bishops conference) CEI said too before the election results," Parolin said. "He said that there was the will on our side to talk to everyone and to talk about the things that we don't agree on, because it seems important for us for the dialogue to tackle questions that can be particularly difficult and complex".
The two parties that made the most gains in the election, the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) and the rightwing League, have called for a tougher line on migrants.
Pope Francis has repeatedly called for migrants to be welcomed.
