Mercy is not an "abstract word" but a "way of life", Pope Francis said during a meeting with his own Jesuit brothers at the Vatican on Monday. "Mercy...puts concrete gestures that touch the flesh of one's neighbour and are institutionalised in works of mercy before words," Francis said. The pope also recalled that "joy is an integral part of the Gospel message" and so its search should not be confused with the search for "a special effect". Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, "opens his eyes and awakens to the discernment of spirits by discovering this different value of lasting and transient joys," Francis said.
